One lazy girl's journey to getting fit

What I Have learned from THREE days of counting calories
  1. Counting calories does not make me feel good about myself
  2. It makes me want to eat to reach a goal, not when I’m hungry
  3. I apparently eat too much protein and not enough carbs
  4. I just don’t eat enough
  5. 1200 calories can be a lot of food when you aren’t hungry
  6. There’s a lot of sugar in bananas
  7. I don’t like counting calories

I’ll persevere for a few more days and write a more comprehensive report then. But so far, to be honest, I am not loving it.

Feeling like you haven’t lost much weight?

We all have those days when it feels like we may as well be back at the start of our weight loss journey; like we may as well give up. I know that I’m certainly guilty of forgetting just how far I’ve come from where I was when I started.

There are several different things you can do. Some people only need measurements, whether it’s the scales or inches, to remind themselves how far they’ve come.

Some people take photos to be able to compare, side by side, their change.

Personally, I prefer something a little bit more physical.

Whenever I’m feeling fat or like my weight loss means nothing, I pick up something to remind myself just how much weight I’ve lost.

If I’m at the gym, I’ll pick up a 25kg weight. If I’m at home, I’ll pick up a 2 litre bottle of milk and remember I’ve lost 13 of them off my body.

There’s something about holding the weight in your hands that really makes it feel more real, how far you’ve come. For bonus points, try putting that weight in a back pack and going about your daily activities for a little while.

Whether you’ve lost, 2, 5, 10, 20 or 50 kgs (or pounds), you should feel proud of it. Weight loss is not easy. Focus on how far you’ve come, not how far you have to go and don’t give up.

Non-scale victory:

Having to try really hard to get a double chin for a photo.

Calorie Counter

I never realised how confusing some calorie counters can be. I entered my details into one and it said I shouldn’t consume more than 1500 calories. BUT what it didn’t say is whether that was supposed to be my deficit or if that’s just what I should eat to not put on weight. I’m going to go right ahead and assume that’s a max including a 500 calorie deficit because otherwise I’d be having only 1,000 calories per day and that is ridiculous.

But anyway, just be sure you read all the info if you get confused, like I did.

Sometimes I feel like..

my boobs and tummy are having a race to see who can lose fat first. Unfortunately, my boobs are currently winning. But I have a feeling my tummy may make a late run for it (or, at least I hope so, anyway).

Slow and steady, that’s my tummy. Just like a tortoise.

Squat Rack Etiquette

What would you do if you needed/wanted to use the squat rack and there was a guy in there doing ab work… on the floor… not using the bar (yes, this happened)? Is this worse than curling in the squat rack?

Woah.

I just realised that as of this morning, I’ve lost 27kgs which is almost 60 pounds. That’s ridiculous! I just can’t believe it…

And seriously, if I can do it, any one can. I had like, 0 motivation when I started out and had SO many set backs. You’ve just got to keep chipping away at it.

I’ve only got another 3 to go, which I’m going to try to lose by the time my birthday rolls around in June. Looks like I was right at my last birthday when I said it was the last one I was going to have as an overweight person.

And another one. Sigh. These fascinate me as much as they make me sad. Just another reminder that even celebrities don’t look like celebrities and why everyone needs to learn to appreciate their own unique beauty.

One Week

So I’m less than a week out from flying home for easter. To be honest, I’m a little bit scared. I’m not only seeing my trainer for the first time in 8 weeks, but also my boyfriend (to be clear, they are different people).

I’m scared about seeing my trainer in case I haven’t been doing enough. I know I’ve stepped up the amount and variety of my work outs since summer, but still… I just hope it’s enough, y’know? But I’m pretty sure he’ll be impressed with my squats.

As far as the bf goes… well, we were together when I was at my heaviest, but I just feel like I’ve been working so hard and I want to look different than I did last time I saw him.

I don’t know, maybe I’m silly. My biggest fear is that they’ll think I’ve gone backwards, even though I know my weight has gone down. Ehhhh.

Grazing

I just realised I’ve been eating pretty much all day. Nothing big, just small amounts often. This is weird for me. Usually I don’t feel like eating between meals.

So far I’ve eaten:

A banana/yogurt smoothie (standard breakfast).
A tin of chilli tuna.
Minestrone soup (standard lunch)
A tortilla (I heated it up in the microwave until it was crunchy. Yum)
A handful of cereal.
5 cups of tea
1 cup of coffee
1 litre of water.

I don’t know what I’m going to have for dinner yet. I’m just craving crunchy, bland carbs. Hence the tortilla and the cereal. Hmmm. But, I’m off to pump class so it’ll be ok. And, to be honest, it isn’t that much food, especially calorie wise.

It annoys me that ***rant warning***

So many people hate it when people look cute at the gym. I have cute workout wear. I just bought leggings with a slight silver leopard print on them and matching t-shirt. Why? Because I would never go if I had to put on clothes that I hated or made me look like shit. Yes, I know that I’m going to the gym to transform my body. Yes, I know I’m going to get sweaty and smelly and gross. Yes, my clothes will have sweat stains by the time I’m done. But does that mean I can’t look cute when I start?

Do you really think you’re going to get more from your work out because you’re wearing a stained singlet and I’m wearing one that’s glittery and pink?

BUT if I choose to do my hair to try and look nice before I go to the gym, what business is it of yours? So long as I’m not blocking your mirror to fix my lipgloss in the middle of a ‘workout’ who cares?

Here’s a handy tip: it doesn’t matter what you look like at the gym, and that goes for whether you choose to wear designer threads or your daggiest trackies. It’s personal preference. So long as you’re there for the right reasons and giving it your all, who gives a stuff about how you look? Wear what you feel comfortable in and what makes you feel good enough to get to the gym.

That is all, rant over. I’d love to hear others’ thoughts about this topic.

THIS IS NOT A BEFORE AND AFTER! These photos were taken only seconds apart.

How to look like you’ve lost 10lbs in 10 seconds? Improve your posture.

I know that the cool thing to do is to slouch and look like you don’t care. Rounded shoulders have that sexy, rebellious thing going for them that just oozes cool. BUT better posture has so many benefits!

Improving your posture will make you look taller, thinner and more confident. Your belly will appear smaller, your butt more pert and your breasts will look fuller and perkier. WINNING ALL AROUND.

Other than the aesthetic benefits, you’ll help your back and neck health. Good posture is even better for helping your digestion! Additionally, if you engage your core and your glutes you’ll work them throughout the day so it’s a workout that doesn’t feel like a workout!

So remember: shoulders back, suck in that belly to engage the core and stand tall and proud.

This is my weekly shop. The only thing that isn’t here that should be is milk (but we had enough at the time).
Basically, from this, I made:
- blueberyy and almond protein muffins- Fried-rice style Quinoa- Minestrone Soup with lots of veggies and ravioli (that 2 person bag of ravioli has fed me for 4 meals so far and has a heap more to go…)- Beef Burritos- Banana protein smoothies
I also had some snacks in terms of macadamias, cashews, tuna and apples.  I try to eat everything with a dose of protein. My main source of carbs is vegetables (this is he first time I’ve had pasta in forever). I try to limit my fruit because I don’t find it particularly filling and it is too easy for me to binge on.
